Yesterday I took part in the Edinburgh Crohns and Colitis 5km “walk it” event. Along with my sister who suffers from Ulcerative Colitis, my mum, Aunt who also suffers from Colitis, cousins, nieces and my beautiful daughters. It was a day to remember, full of sunshine, laughs, a moaning Poppy complaining about sore legs 😂, a great atmosphere from the organisers down to the walkers and to finish the day off a family BBQ at the sisters house.
Once I got home and had put 2 very sleepy girls to bed I sat and really thought about what the day had meant to me, you see, 2 years ago my sister was in the middle of her worst flare up to date, hospitalised for a week after giving birth only 3 months earlier, barely able to lift herself from the pillow and the whispered chat of possible surgery. I remember thinking how unbelievably unfair it was for such an amazing women to have been dealt such a horrible illness, why her?….I mean she literally never complains, the only time I seen her cry was at the prospect of being away from her kids. She takes everything on the head and deals with it way better than I or most ever could. So yesterday looking at her striding in front of me was so overwhelming, how far she had come from that hospital bed, how much she had achieved since then. She is truly remarkable, She is a true warrior!!!!
It was so amazing to see so many people taking part and hearing others stories about both Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, there are so many more people connected to IBD than I would have ever thought.
